Privacy policy

Your privacy matters — here is exactly how we handle your data

This page explains how Inner Balance Living collects, uses and protects your information. We have written it in plain language, because a policy you cannot read is not transparency.

Our privacy promise. We do not sell your personal information, we collect the minimum we need, and you can have it deleted with a single email.

Privacy at a glance

The short version

Six answers to the questions readers actually ask. Every card links to the full detail below.

Information we collect

Two categories, nothing hidden

We collect what you deliberately give us, plus the standard technical data every website receives.

Personal information

Only what you choose to share with us, when you subscribe or get in touch.

  • Email address you give us when subscribing to The Balance Brief
  • Name, email and message content submitted through our contact forms
  • Newsletter preferences, topics selected and subscription status
  • Correspondence history when you write to an editor or the privacy desk

Usage and device data

Collected automatically, used in aggregate, and never combined into a personal profile.

  • Device type, screen size and operating system
  • Browser type, language and general settings
  • IP address, truncated where our analytics provider supports it
  • Pages viewed, time on page, referring site and approximate region

How we use your information

Seven purposes — and no others

If we ever want to use your data for something outside this list, we will ask you first.

  • Improve the website experience

Understanding navigation and reading patterns so pages load fast and content is easy to find.

  • Deliver newsletters

Sending The Balance Brief to the address you provided, and only the editions you opted into.

  • Respond to inquiries

Answering questions, corrections, pitches and privacy requests sent through our forms.

  • Improve content quality

Seeing which guides answer reader questions — and which need rewriting or retiring.

  • Analyse performance

Aggregate reporting on traffic, page speed and errors. We do not build individual profiles.

  • Maintain security

Detecting abuse, spam submissions and attempts to disrupt the site.

  • Personalise recommendations

Suggesting related articles based on the topic you are reading, not on your identity.

Cookies & tracking

Every cookie type, and why it exists

Cookies are small files stored by your browser. Only the essential ones load before you choose.

  • Essential cookies

Keep the site working: security, load balancing and remembering your consent choice.

    Always active

  • Analytics cookies

Aggregate measurement of visits and reading behaviour so we can improve our coverage.

    Consent required

  • Advertising cookies

Used by ad partners to measure delivery and, where permitted, personalise advertising.

    Consent required

  • Affiliate tracking

Attributes a purchase to us so a merchant can pay a commission. Never adds cost to you.

    Consent required

  • Preference cookies

Remember settings such as text size, saved articles and whether you dismissed a banner.

    Optional

Advertising and affiliate tracking

Advertising partners and affiliate programmes may use cookies or similar technologies to measure campaign performance, prevent fraud and — where permitted by your consent and local law — personalise the advertising you see. You can manage these preferences at any time through your browser settings or our consent controls, and you can read the detail in our cookie policy and affiliate disclosure. Declining these cookies does not limit access to any article.

Third-party services

Who else processes data, and why

These providers act on our instructions under contract. This list is updated when a provider changes.

  • Google Analytics

Aggregate traffic and readership measurement. IP anonymisation is enabled where available.

  • Google AdSense

Serves display advertising in standard IAB slots and measures ad delivery.

  • Email marketing platform

Stores newsletter subscriptions and delivers The Balance Brief.

  • Social media platforms

Share buttons and embedded posts may set their own cookies when you interact with them.

  • Embedded videos

Video players from third-party hosts load only when you press play, where technically possible.

  • Affiliate networks

Track referred purchases so partner merchants can attribute and pay commissions.

Data security

How we protect what we hold

We use reasonable administrative, technical and organisational measures appropriate to the sensitivity of the data.

  • Encryption in transit

The whole site is served over HTTPS, and data sent to our providers is encrypted.

  • Least-privilege access

Only the team members who need access to subscriber data have it, and access is reviewed.

  • Vetted processors

Providers are assessed and bound by data-processing agreements before we send them anything.

No online system can guarantee absolute security. We cannot promise that data transmitted over the internet is completely safe, but we do commit to acting quickly and notifying affected readers if something goes wrong.

Data retention

We keep it only as long as we need it

Information is retained only for as long as reasonably necessary for legal, operational or service-related purposes.

Newsletter data
Kept until you unsubscribe, then removed from active lists within 30 days.
Contact form messages
Retained for up to 24 months so we can follow up on corrections and queries.
Analytics data
Retained in aggregate; identifiable records expire on the provider's standard schedule.
Legal and accounting records
Held only for as long as applicable law requires, then securely deleted.

Your privacy rights

What you can ask us to do

Depending on where you live, applicable law may give you some or all of these rights. We honour them for every reader regardless.

  • Request access

Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.

  • Request correction

Have inaccurate or incomplete information corrected.

  • Request deletion

Ask us to erase your data where no legal obligation requires us to keep it.

  • Withdraw consent

Change your mind at any time; withdrawal does not affect prior lawful processing.

  • Manage cookie preferences

Update your consent choices here or through your browser settings.

  • Unsubscribe

One click in the footer of any email removes you from the list immediately.

To exercise any of these, email privacy@innerbalanceliving.com. We respond within 30 days and will never charge a fee for a reasonable request.

Scope & changes

Children, international readers and policy updates

Children's privacy

Inner Balance Living is written for adults and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16 unless a specific service states otherwise. If you believe a child has provided us with data, email the privacy desk and we will delete it promptly.

International readers

We publish worldwide, and privacy rights differ by region — the GDPR in the UK and EEA, the CCPA/CPRA in California, and equivalent laws elsewhere. Your data may be processed in countries other than your own, under appropriate safeguards. Regional specifics are maintained in this section as our provider list changes.

Policy updates

We update this policy periodically as our practices, providers or the law change. Material changes are announced on this page and, where appropriate, by email.
