How we earn — and why it never changes what we recommend

Some links on Inner Balance Living may be affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. That revenue keeps our reporting free — it does not buy a place in it.

Our transparency statement. Commercial partners never see, shape or approve editorial content. Every article containing affiliate links says so before the first link appears.

The basics

No jargon, no small print. Here is the whole mechanism in four steps.

  • What an affiliate link is

A normal link to a retailer with a tracking code attached, so the merchant can see the visit came from us.

  • How it works

You click, you shop as usual, and if you buy something the merchant records the referral and pays us a small percentage.

  • Why they exist

They let us keep every article free to read without putting our reporting behind a paywall or subscription.

  • Where commissions go

Straight back into the work: writer fees, expert review, fact-checking, photography and site running costs.

No additional cost

You never pay more for using our links

The price you see is the price you would pay going to the retailer directly. Any commission is paid by the merchant out of their own margin — not added to your order, and never billed to you. If you would rather not use an affiliate link, search for the product yourself; our recommendation stands either way.

Our promise to readers

Six commitments that outrank any commission

These are the rules our editors work to when a product appears anywhere on this site.

  • Honest recommendations

If a product is mediocre, we say so — or we leave it out entirely. A commission never converts a no into a yes.

  • Independent reviews

Brands do not preview, approve or edit our coverage, and paying us cannot buy a place in a roundup.

  • Reader-first decisions

We recommend the option that suits the reader's need and budget, including the cheaper one and 'you don't need this'.

  • Evidence-based content

Product claims are checked against the research and, for wellness products, against expert guidance.

  • Transparency

Affiliate links are disclosed on every article that contains them, at the top of the page, before you click.

  • No hidden costs

You pay the same price you would pay going direct. There is no markup, surcharge or reader fee, ever.

Editorial independence

A firm wall between revenue and reporting

Our commercial team and our editorial team are separate, and only one of them decides what gets published.

  • Partners have no editorial input

No affiliate partner, advertiser or brand sees an article before publication, suggests edits, or has any say in what we cover.

  • Commission rates are not a factor

Products are chosen on quality, relevance, safety and usefulness. Editors do not see commission rates when shortlisting.

  • We publish critical coverage

We regularly recommend against products from programmes we are enrolled in, and drop partners rather than soften findings.

  • Traffic is never sold

No link placement, ranking position or 'best overall' badge is available for purchase at any price.

How we select products

Five stages before anything is recommended

Most products we assess never make it onto the site. This is the path the ones that do have to survive.

  1. 1

    Research

We define what the product actually needs to do, then survey the market, ingredient lists, specs and independent testing.

  2. 2

    Expert evaluation

A dietitian, physiotherapist or expert assesses safety, claims and whether the evidence supports the marketing.

  3. 3

    Editorial review

An editor checks the shortlist for balance, value for money, accessibility and any conflict of interest.

  4. 4

    Recommendation

Only what survives all three stages is published — with the reasoning, the trade-offs and who it is not right for.

  5. 5

    Periodic reassessment

Roundups return to the review queue. Reformulated, discontinued or downgraded products are removed.

We occasionally publish paid partnerships and promotional collaborations. When we do, they are labelled clearly and unambiguously — a "Sponsored" or "Paid partnership" tag at the top of the page, in the article card, and in the byline area. Sponsored pieces are visually distinct from editorial articles, are excluded from independent rankings and reviews, and still have to meet our accuracy standards: we decline claims we cannot support.

Product accuracy

Prices, availability, formulations, specifications and shipping terms change frequently, and retailers update them without notice. Details shown on this site reflect the information available at the time of writing or last review. Always confirm the current price, ingredient list and terms on the retailer's own page before buying — and check with a expert or pharmacist before starting any supplement.

How we earn revenue

Every way this publication makes money

No revenue source — present or future — influences editorial integrity, product selection or content accuracy.

  • Affiliate partnerships

A small commission from merchants when a reader buys something we recommended.

  • Display advertising

Standard IAB ad slots, clearly labelled and kept visually separate from editorial content.

  • Sponsored content

Occasional paid collaborations, always labelled as sponsored and never presented as independent reporting.

  • Newsletter sponsorships

A single marked sponsor slot in The Balance Brief, separate from the editorial section.

  • Digital products (future)

Guides and tools we may publish ourselves. Planned, not yet live.
